Built in 2013, this building addition provided the owners with enclosed vehicle parking and a studio space above. The parking garage connects to the home by a breezeway that extends to the original home’s mudroom.
A primary concern of the project was to ensure that the addition blended together well with the original home, giving the impression the entire building was constructed at one time. Cues taken from the original building informed the roof lines, the massing, and placement of the new structure.
The outside space interior to the two building masses was easily established as a focal point for a parking courtyard, giving presence to the function of this exterior space and tying the two building masses together across this open space. The end result enhances the distinction of the two masses without overstating their separation.
